k4 Leon fins!

New ‘LEON’ rear quad fins.

Our new ‘Leon’ rear quad Leon Jamaer signature fins are now available! The fastest and loosest fins in the range. Available in both the regular ‘dynamic flex’ material and for the first time our new ‘Super stiff’ material. Ride like Leon!

Some words from the man himself..

“We designed a fin that is very versatile so I can use it around the world from Hookipa to onshore conditions at home. Most of the time I use 14cm and in my bigger boards above 90 liters I like to use 15cm. In general I would choose the soft material when I want more control in powerful or choppy waves. They guarantee a really comfortable wavering sensation. If I want a bit more speed and aggression in smaller or more onshore conditions I rather take the stiff material. In my JP Quads I put the fins to the middle of the slot box. If the waves are small and I need a super tight bottom turn I put them roughly 5mm forward or, when waves get above logo high, I put them 5mm back from mid position. ”

Choose the black logo for ‘Dynamic flex’ – Grip, looseness and control. The classic k4 material, chosen by all our team riders.

Choose the red logo for ‘Super stiff’ – Instant response and easy release. Our new material with G10 like stiffness.

The Leon template for speed and looseness with it’s low tip area. We recommend going slightly bigger than usual with your front fins to give extra grip on the rail. Leon uses 10 Ezzy fronts with 14cm rears.

Windsurf Coaching, Introduction to waves and jumping control

EL MEDANO, TENERIFE 2017

INTRO WAVES AND JUMPING CONTROL

WINDSURFCOACHING WITH COLIN DIXON AND GUEST COACHES: MARCO WEDELE AND LUKE BAILLIE

THE PLACE

El Medano is a charming village with a real surfy, laidback atmosphere, great food and most importantly epic sailing. It is an extremely popular windsurfing destination and it’s not hard to see why, there are 3 sailing spots catering for different abilities from learning to wave sail up to throwing aerials and big loops. Launching and sailing off the main beach offers a great teaching area and playground for those learning to launch and get comfortable in the waves, the harbour wall provides a step up and some good wave riding and jumping, then Cabezo beach just around the corner is a little more extreme and even hosts a PWA wave event during the summer months.

COACHING

We coach 6 days out of 7, with a day off depending on the forecast and transfer.

We will be on the water as much as possible and if not sailing or refueling you will be soaking up the WindSurfCoaching Jedi knowledge.

The bonus is we have two coaches, Colin and the Guest coach, this means that we can split the group into different abilities so we can go where the group desires and where suits each level.

The level we ask for to join the clinic is ‘water starting and sailing in both foot straps’. We can help you with getting faster, starting in waves, building confidence in the waves, first jumps and all the way up to cracking your first loops, forwards and backwards. For those looking to improve their wave sailing ability we can guide you with timing on the wave right through to your first real smacks.

We will be doing several video sessions, as we believe this is the best way for us to show you how you look on the water and where you can improve. Please bring a USB stick or a hard drive so you can take the footage home.

We will also show you the town of El Medano as we know it, take you to all of our favourite places to eat and drink and enjoy the company of the other guests.

EQUIPMENT HIRE

We hire equipment at Tenerife Windsurf Solution (TWS) Playa Sur, El Medano.
We use this centre because they offer over seven different brands using the latest gear all with the right carbon masts and carbon booms. It makes our job as coaches a lot easier. It means us and you can not blame the kit!

               FLIGHTS AND ACCOMMODATION

Flights are really good and cheap at this time of the year and range from £80 return all the way to £200. You can fly from lots of UK airports to Tenerife South Airport and once you land it’s only a ten minute transfer to El Medano.

We have secured three apartments next to each other, each has 2 bedrooms, sleeping 4 people, right on the sea front for 200 Euro per person per week. There are also plenty of online booking apartment options, make sure stay within town as pretty much anywhere in Medano is only a 10 minute walk to the centre, they start from around 40 Euro per night for a two bedroom place. Deposit 200 euros per Apartment

TENBY DEMO THIS WEEKEND… A weekend of Windsurfing and SUP 27th – 28th August

The weekend is nearly upon us and we’re excited to confirm that all the major UK Brands will be on Tenby beach with more windsurf & SUP kit than we’ve ever had out before!

Thanks hugely to everyone that has turned out the past few years and supported the The Caldy island relay over the August Bank Holiday! The money we have raised for Cancer Research has been greatly received and it’s been a real pleasure to hang out at the Tenby Windsurf & Lifesaving club to help them run these events and demo the kit with some of our top UK distributors! It’s also been a great time for welsh windsurfers from years gone by right to the young hot shots and all their families to hang out at such a great beach!

After some good fun racing on windsurf boards all shapes and sizes, on SUP’s and in fancy dress – the Caldy Island Relay has run it’s course and will be taking a break for now!  The focus is now purely about having fun, getting all the family on the water…..and trying the latest kit!  To grow that side of things we are very pleased to be working with Windsurf Mag as part of their UK demo tour visiting only 4 locations each year!

This august bank holiday weekend the ‘Windsurf Mag Demo Tour’ will be visiting Tenby with all of the top UK brands there to let you check out and try the latest windsurfing and SUP kit – and as always, there will be something for everyone to have a go on!

We’ll have the top windsurfing legends like Nik Baker, Farrel Oshea, Dave white and Andy ‘Bubble’ Chambers on hand to give you there top kit and tuning advice as well as launching some of the 2017 gear in the UK for the first time!

We will also have Mark ‘Sparky’ Hosegood on hand to give some free coaching and clinic time all weekend!

If you cant get to NWF……you have to come to this!!  In fact, you’ll get a batter chance to actually take the kit out here……right on the beach!

Here are some brands you can expect to see:

Fanatic/North/Ion
Simmer/Oshea
Starboard/Severne
JP/Neil Pryde
RRD
Goya
Point 7
Quattro
Ga/Tabou
Ezzy

We look forward to catching up and chatting over the weekend, and getting on the water with a good crowd!

If you have any specific requirements for kit or queries (except accommodation) before the weekend please drop me a mail jim@puravidaboardriders.co.uk

Saturday and Sunday August bank holiday weekend at the beautifull Tenby in Wales. All the suppliers will be there in force with the latest kit to try. You can expect all the usual fun and action on the water with latest Windsurfing, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) and windSUP’s to try out. There is camping locally so come down and make a weekend of it.

Don’t miss this!

Fanatic Stubby and Quatro Super Mini, wave board reviews & special deals!!

Sometimes there is just a graphic change with board brands, or another similar wave board released…..that’s pretty much as good as the last! But the most recent developments in board design, especially with shapers like Sebastian Wenzel and Keith Taboul leading the way…….really have brought us something special. Battling against steady price increases, we have actually seen these boards cover a much bigger wind range and more conditions with stacks more ‘ease of use’ built in, so you simply need less boards! Maybe the cost isn’t so bad after all?!

The new materials are light and strong, feeling amazing under foot with better planing characteristics for each size! At Puravida we see almost no warranty claims any more – so it’s a good time to buy a board in my eyes, especially if you can snag a deal before the 2017 price increases!!

Stubby concept boards are probably one of the most important shapes of modern wave sailing!! It’s the easiest wave board I have ever used, so much so that Fanatic have just released a FREEWAVE version that I’m pretty certain will change the free wave concept completely and Quattro now have the SUPER MINI that is the only other board on the market that comes close to the stubby in terms of that kind of easy to use format with such a huge/fun wind range!

The stubby concept works unbelievably well, and what makes it so good is that it is SO EASY to sail in the conditions we actually get 90% of the time, and I can guarantee you will get more turns on a wave than you think, plus they are so efficient to get going and tank upwind! Don’t think of this as being a rad wave board that’s hard to sail, it’s more like a free wave that makes you shred – there’s no question that I plane quicker, go upwind easier and ride waves better on this board than anything else I’ve used before! The wind range is massive from one board and it would probably make the ultimate first time or one wave board quiver for anyone!! I can hit the road with just the stubby 88 (for my weight), a 5.3 and 4.7 with one mast & boom, having 90% of wavesailing covered on a minimal quiver of kit, intact that’s exactly what I took with me on a recent trip to the canaries in just one board bag weighing less than 30 kilos……..wave sailing is getting closer to surfing all the time, there’s nothing like keeping it simple!

Here’s a great little vid from local ripper and ace camera man Screamer Dave with a few of the local boys enjoying the new style wave boards from Fanatic, Quattro, simmer and Goya – I had a lot of fun that day in the little waves on the stubby making the most of the conditions!!

I’ve tested the stubby 88 in conditions from 1 foot onshore much to mast high down the line in Mauritius and it’s delivered some of my best see ions of all time hands down!

At Puravida we have the 88 & 77 stubby available to demo and the Freewave Stubby 95 is on it’s way as I write this.
Now, don’t just take my word for it, you can demo these boards yourself and there are plenty of reviews out there saying the same thing, if anything perhaps some of them are a little under stated on just how good the new style boards are.  Here’s a great write up from Adrian at Boardseeker who is known for his honesty!  It’s very well written and also helps you place the boards in there range in terms of which one to use for the conditions and riding you want to do.

The board specs from fanatic and some great vid clips are available here:

FANATIC SPECS

QUATRO SUPER MINI

The quattro super mini is the other board to consider that is of a very similar concept.  The main difference with the SUPER Mini is the bigger sizes (94 and 104) are better and easier to sail for bigger guys (say 95 kilos and over) as it has a the volume concentrated further back and under the straps.  This board is so smooth and well behaved it’s perhaps even easier to sail than the stubby (and that’s saying something) but a little less lively and more relaxed off the back foot with more volume in the tail.  This board really has the best acceleration of any wave board I’ve tried and is already selling well straight off the first delivery only a few weeks ago.  We have the bigger sizes in 94 and 104 available to demo now and the 84 will be coming very soon.

Other boards to consider in the compact wave board range that have massive all-round appeal are the Fanatic Tri-Wave and the Quattro Cube.  With the 2 boards above these are by far our 4 most versatile boards on the shelf at the moment, and the ones all our testers have had the most fun with in the conditions we are most likely to actually sail in!  If you think of the versatility of the stubby concept, these boards loose a little bit of the bottom end and ‘shred ability’ in poor conditions, in favour of a bit more ‘down the line’ appeal in terms of how they ride.  They would make a great one boards solution or partner to a stubby in a 2 board quiver.

If you are looking for a slightly more dedicated wave board that has the edge in down the line conditions or bigger waves but still stacks of speed and all-round appeal, instead of or as a partner to one of the compact wave boards ….. our 2 most popular more dedicated shapes this year with team riders and customers alike have been the 3 Fin Quattro Pyramid and the 4 fin Fanatic Quad, both are real fast and loose, and surprisingly easy to sail too – standout boards!!  There’s quite a difference in style with the Fanatic Quad riding more off the front foot with a smooth and fluid turn, whereas the Pyramid allows you to push hard off the back foot and carve around hard rather than the more slashy feel and broken out turns you can get from a quad.

(At 13 stone/85 kilos I tend to sail the fanatic stubby 88 & quad 90 as my 2 main boards or Quattro Super Mini 94 and Cube 85 as a guide from 5.6 down to 4.2 – Jim)

If you’d like to find out more about any of these boards just give me a call as I’ve been testing them for some time now and have a good range of sizes in each model on our demo fleet!

With the ‘BREXIT’ effect hitting watersports industry quite badly this year, the drop in value of the pound coupled with some increases in price ahead means we’ve got a few special offers in limited numbers that should help keep you on the right side of the deal!  Also make sure you take advantage of our trade in scheme which guarantees you a minimum of £200 or more against any new board at rrp no matter what you have – why not bring us classic?!  Puravida Boardriders want your used boards!!

Don’t forget that the Fanatic Stubby and Quad shapes are so good that they carry through to 2017, making the 2016 graphic board a killer deal for the moment!

The O’Shea inflatable windsup… Windsup at its best!

O’Shea iWIND 11’0

O’Shea popped their inflatable Windsurf / Sup to Boards magazine for test .

Primarilly we designed this board as a family windsurfer , the remit was to do make the best inflatable windsurfer on the market , much improving on the sup with mast foot insert concept .Pleasantly we were surprised that the Sup element was not really compromised at all , yet as a windsurfer it out performed all the other brands offerings . A win win situation !!

Don’t just take their word for it… heres what BOARD MAGAZINE had to say…

There’s no doubt windsurfing can be a tricky sport to get into and traditional beginners boards have far from helped the cause.  They are big, heavy, difficult to transport, difficult to store and when you progress they quickly become redundant.

The first inflatable windsurfing boards onto the market were really just SUP boards with a mast base fitting.  They were followed up by dedicated windsurfing models, but as with many new technologies, prices were not competitive.  The first dedicated inflatable windsurfing board I tried was over £1400 for the board only!

But a couple of years down the line, things are in a much better place and the new O’Shea iWind has pushed the envelope again.  This is a board designed equally from a windsurfing and SUP perspective.  You can buy it as a board only for £749 or complete with a choice of a 2.0m, 3.0m, 4.5m or 5.5m rig from £998 (depending upon rig size).

Learning should be simple and that’s what O’Shea have rightly strived for with the iWind.  So with the ethos of keeping it simple, here are 10 very simple things that we think are cool about the iWind –

  1. It’s big! Stability is key when you are learning. If you feel stable, you feel confident and can progress a lot quicker.  Whilst width might seem the obvious answer, if the board is not long enough, it won’t track in a straight line very well.  The iWind is both long and wide and provides one of the most stable learning platforms we have come across.
  2. It windsurfs well. With the center fin in place, the iWind strikes a really nice balance between being directional enough to make forward and upwind progress without squirrelling around, yet is still maneuverable enough for a child with a small rig to be able to turn with ease.
  3. It SUP’s well. A lot of these combination windsurf/SUP boards end up being a little too wide and short to be good for SUP’ing, but the length of the iWind again makes it nicely directional and good for covering distance with a paddle. The volume and stability are also a bonus and even allow the captain to carry a few passengers!
  4. It’s a good price! At £998 complete with a rig (2.0m) its hard to complain about the value on offer here. If you don’t need a rig, the board alone will cost you £749. If it costs less than £1000 to give the same pleasure to your friends and family that you get from windsurfing, and have a light wind toy as part of the bargain, that seems pretty good value to us.
  5. The rig is ready to go. Each size of sail comes with its own unique mast and boom, meaning that there is no messing around with adjustment. Simply pull the sail to the bottom and the outhaul to the end and you are good to go.
  6. The rig works really well. This style of rig may look low-tech, but don’t be deceived. They are designed to compliment this style of board, being light, easy to rig, powerful in light winds and giving plenty of feel and feedback in the hands. You can also go smaller than you might think with this style of rig, making the first steps easier.  3.0m is perfect for most adults to learn on and our 10 year old test pilots were perfectly matched to the 2.0m
  7. This board should be durable. O’shea have gained a lot of experience and built a solid reputation within the inflatable SUP market for producing durable boards. They have applied the same technology to the iWind, so we would expect many seasons of trouble free sailing. These inflatable boards are great because they don’t scratch, dent and ding like a traditional hard board.  There is of course always the potential to puncture them, but they are extremely tough, so you would have to be pretty careless/ unlucky for that to happen.
  8. It’s not just a beginners board. Open your mind and you will realize there are so many fun days to be had on this board. Here are a few suggestions; Learn to helicopter tack, duck gybe and fast tack.  Learn the basics in light winds and you will be 90% there next time you are on your short board. Go explore.  Pack some food, a mobile phone and head off downwind along the coast, exploring areas you might never have ventured otherwise.  At the end of the day give a friend a call and get them to pick you up.  Your inflatable board will fit in their car no problem! Give your friends a ride on the front of the board. The iWind is plenty big enough for this, giving them a sense of what windsurfing is about without them having to try!  Go fishing.  Sail (or SUP) out with a fishing line, a picnic and a cool beverage and let the hours pass by!  You get the idea, with a bit of imagination, the iWind is a board than can open up many new adventures.
