Idiot’s Guide to Foiling – 2

JP Prone Foil Surf

So, it has been a little while since part one was put up, and I have got a few sessions under my belt in the waves now. The setup I am using is the JP Prone Surf Foil 6’0 board with neil Pryde Glide Surf Large foil. I chose this setup mostly on sizing, but also as it offers the cheapest setup to get foil surfing aswell, showing that it can be done relatively cheaply!

So having had my moment of enlightenment behind a boat and found the sweet spot in controlling flight, I confidently headed down to the beach on a 4ft @ 4 seconds 8knot onshore day at a rivermouth break (deep channel, where the wave mellows out after takeoff), which I had to myself! Conditions that I would normally ignore and favour Netflix over…..

Paddling out was stable and floaty compared to my normal surfboard, and duckdiving was surprisingly easy given the mega float of the board, the foil does a good job of projecting the board under the wave. Tentatively paddling into my first waves, the onshore blown out conditions really helped push me into waves without them banking up into walls of foil death, and before I knew it the board was pulling into a wave and I was popping up into the unknown.

What i think surprised me at this point was that i had popped up, hit my stance and the board was still on the water until I used my foot pressures from behind the boat to lift the foil. I fully expected these moments to be chaotic and out of control with the board lifting before I had a chance to pop up, but I was wrong. From this moment on I relaxed, realised the fears and worries I had were completely irrational and proceeded to catch wave after wave after wave.

With the pop ups in control, and stance alterations becoming smaller and smaller, i found myself rising into controlled flights more and more consistently, which then lead to the next, unexpected hurdle – speed! The minute the foil lifts, you go from 0-60 in the blink of an eye, the peak where you took off becomes a spec behind you and you are way way out on the shoulder before you know it, only unlike surfing you are still accelerating!! All i kept thinking was front foot pressure, keep that nose down and in control and the rest will all be fine!

So, big pointers from my first couple of sesions in the waves;

-Relax, taking off on a wave is way more controlled and slowpaced than your head might lead you to believe.

-If you fall, fall. Don’t kick the board away thinking your saving your head from being cut off, this will simply power up the foil and it will go wherever if wants. If you go with the fall, generally I found the board carried on with the wave and stayed well clear of me.

-If your head is saying the wave is about to pass under you and you’ve missed it, give a couple more big deep paddles and go for the pop up. I found the foil had a subtle tipping point where if you were quick you could actually catch what felt like swell by being quick to hit the minimum lift point of the foil (around 4-6knot board speed)

-Onshore, low period (ie/ Crap) conditions are actually perfect for getting your first flights, the whitewater helps push you in, then once up the foil is generating lift from whats under the whitewater so you’ll be grand!

Idiot’s Guide to Foiling – 1

So, as you may have noticed from recent social media posts, we are quite into foiling and can really see the potential for it here in the UK. As such we will be releasing regular posts to document our journey through surf foiling to hopefully help you guys along the way aswell as give our thoughts on some of the kit available out there as we use it. Sorry Ben @ Windsurfing TV for knicking the title, but we feel we fit the title of idiot a bit better anyway…. 😉

Who am I? – I am Andy, the website/shop manager here at Puravida. 29, 6’8 and 105kgs so very much outside the spectrum of most brands sizings of kit which will no doubt give interesting results down the line….

History – Surfing/windsurfing for around 15 years. Have also been windfoiling for about a year (which i thought would be helpful to transfer, more on that later!). Generally surf on boards between 38-43l and windsurf on 95l upwards.

Session 1 – BEHIND A BOAT! Really cannot stress this one enough, the learning curve behind a boat is mega, feeling differences in foot placement, weight alternations, and not sh*tting yourself when you first take flight is invaluable.

Learnings – First thing is first, what really amazed me was just how much front foot pressure was needed. With my foiling to date being with a windsurf rig which gives a lot of mast foot pressure keeping the nose down, it was a real eye opener (and leg burner!) just how much pressure needed to be put down. What really helped was physically moving my front foot much further forwards and not being afraid to adopt a 1970’s Waimea big wave inspired stance for a little more coverage and control of the trim. It also goes without saying, you need to keep everything over the centre line of the board!

What also really helped was making sure the boat speed was low, so as to ensure that any lift was created by my weight movements and pumping rather than just getting auto lift from the boat speed (this is what happened on run 1, and it is a good lesson in front foot pressure, but a bit useless in finding the sweet spot on the foil). After a short while I had what alcoholics refer to as a ‘moment of clarity’. I found the sweet spot, got the pumping just right and suddenly felt the tension and reliance on the ski rope disappear – I was free!! Once in flight, the foil was fast and surprisingly stable, and you can really feel it accelerate off every bit of swell and the boat wake so it is important to keep your weight low so as to be prepared for this.

Falling – When you fall, fall. Sounds obvious huh?! But what i mean is don’t try and kick the board away from you to get clear of the swinging axe of doom strapped to the bottom of your board. If you do this, the foil will lift and go in whichever direction it wants, meaning its more likely to fire back at you and cause more damage than if you simply went with the fall.

Kit Used for session 1 – Boat session was done on the 6’6 Fanatic Sky SUP foil board and Medium Wing (2000) Fanatic Aero Foil (available June this year).

The bevelled rails and foil specific nature of the board really helped with release from the water surface, aswell as on reimpact with the water where it saw me skim, reset and get flying again, rather than ploughing into a world of pain!

What next? – Session 2 saw me change kit to my new JP Prone Surf Foil 6’0 board and Neil Pryde Glide Surf Large foil in the waves of South Wales, more on that next time!

Solite boots – They’re SO Light!

Solite Boots

Here at Puravida, we aren’t one for fads or gimicky products, so we approached these new boots with caution. Boasting lightweight spec, barefoot feel and heat moulded fit we feared a marketing extraordinaire of a train wreck product. We were wrong……

The new Solite boots come in 3 models, each offering 3mm or 6mm thickness, all of which offer the custom fit heat moulding interior. So what does Heat moulding mean? Essentially, when you get the boots new, fill it with boiling water and leave for 5 mins before emptying and adding cold water for a few seconds to save burning your feet, then slip the boots on. after around 5 mins of wearing the boots, the lower liner moulds to your foot shape to give a simply unrivalled fit to your foot, resulting in comfort like no other. the upper section has a plush thermal liner too and full fluid weded seams so warmth in the water was never an issue, but hey presto, you have a custom fit boot that is insanely comfy and toasty warm in the sea!

The other thing you will notice when you first pop them on is just how good the feel through the sole is – certainly the closest we have found to riding barefoot whilst wearing boots! The sole is not skimpy either, with a hardwearing rubber to make sure it does offer protection against reefs and longevity without wearing out.

All in all, Solite are sure to break the market of wettie boots and we really can’t stress how special these boots are!
